At Plumcat, we craft stories that bring clarity — but more than anything, we want you to feel something. Our recent collaboration with CoffeeBase, an app for coffee lovers and culture explorers, was all about that: showing how it works and pulling viewers into its world. We created an animated video that brings the ritual and richness of coffee culture into the digital space, reflecting the smooth, warm experience of using the app itself.
Let’s take a look at how this project came together and how motion design helped express the brand’s personality in a crowded and competitive market.
Introducing CoffeeBase through animation
CoffeeBase isn’t just another discovery tool. It’s a companion for those who see coffee as a daily ritual, a sensory experience, and a moment of pause. Our goal was to visually reflect that emotional landscape while also showcasing how the app makes exploration intuitive and inspiring. This animation went beyond explaining features. It became a central part of CoffeeBase’s brand storytelling, speaking to both function and feeling.
Why animation?
Design with feeling, not just function – that’s what guided our approach for this project. Rather than simply highlighting app features, we focused on capturing what makes coffee meaningful: the slow pour, the aroma rising in the morning light, the textured comfort of a favorite mug.
Here’s what animation allowed us to do:
Our creative approach
We began by identifying the client’s goals: to highlight the app’s ease of use while emotionally connecting with its audience. Coffee Base was a new product in a crowded space, so standing out was key. We quickly saw that product screenshots wouldn’t connect with their audience. This was a tool for people who experience life through senses, not screens. We needed to tell a story that captured the feel of good coffee, not just how the app works. From there, our creative team developed a strategy that treated animation as a storytelling tool, creating a vivid world around coffee rituals and sensory moments. Instead of showing features, we showed emotions. The animation allowed us to bring in a subtle layer of magical realism, helping people understand the deeper value behind a cup of specialty coffee.
The biggest challenge was avoiding a typical product video. We didn’t want to highlight the app too directly. Once we shifted the focus to the user’s experience and built the story from their point of view, the direction became clear. The product naturally fit into the bigger picture. The final video feels calm and grounded. It celebrates nature, daily rituals, and the quiet joy of things done well. For Coffee Base, it created a meaningful connection with the right audience, without needing to explain too much.
Visual style & storytelling details
Throughout the animation, we aimed for a handcrafted, organic visual style that echoed the daily ritual of coffee brewing.
Design elements included:
Together, they created a visual language that speaks the brand’s tone, rhythm, and soul.
Behind the scenes: from sketches to steam
We began with detailed storyboards, mapping out the animation’s pacing and emotional arc. This allowed us to fine-tune the layout and flow of the information, aligning each transition with the user journey. It also let us capture moments like rising steam or a smooth swipe in a way that felt both natural and intentional. Working closely with CoffeeBase, we iterated on scenes to make sure everything, from lighting to motion speed, supported the experience they wanted to deliver. The goal behind all of this was to create a piece with real strategic impact – and that’s exactly what we achieved. Using a consistent tone, style, and symbolism, we built a strong, recognizable visual identity. But just as important was differentiation: in a space filled with elegant yet generic app explainers, the CoffeeBase animation stood out for its authenticity and warmth. This translated directly into increased viewer engagement, as the tactile, emotional visuals made the video more memorable and more shareable.
And the bonus? The project was featured on our Behance and received enthusiastic community feedback, particularly for its emotional tone and attention to detail.
A final sip
For us at Plumcat, we saw this project as an opportunity to brew a story that truly connects. In today’s market, features alone don’t make brands memorable. But a world built with care, texture, and meaning? That’s what stays with you.
